Coach Joe Spallina has unveiled Stony Brook’s women’s lacrosse schedule for the 2024 season. The lineup boasts a competitive edge, highlighting two national semifinalists from the previous season and a total of 11 games to be played at LaValle Stadium. This announcement was made on Thursday.
In anticipation of the 2024 women’s lacrosse season, Head Coach Joe Spallina of Stony Brook University has unveiled an exciting schedule that promises an array of competitive matchups and thrilling home games at LaValle Stadium. Spallina’s enthusiasm for the upcoming season was palpable as he commented, “This schedule sets up our team to accomplish all of its goals, with many NCAA tournament-caliber opponents including two teams that made the final four. Love the 2024 version of Stony Brook women’s lacrosse and I am very excited to show our team to the lacrosse world.”
The extensive 17-game regular season lineup includes an impressive roster of 11 home games, five away games, and a neutral-site contest. This robust schedule marks a notable milestone, boasting the most home games in a regular season under Spallina’s leadership.
Stony Brook’s calendar features several high-caliber opponents from the lacrosse landscape. Among them are three teams that secured top 25 positions in the ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Poll at the culmination of the 2023 season: No. 3 Syracuse, No. 4 Denver, and No. 17 Johns Hopkins. Additionally, the Seawolves are set to face off against competitive teams such as Drexel, Rutgers, and Stanford, who also received votes in the poll.
Of particular significance is the inclusion of four teams on Stony Brook’s schedule that earned spots in the 2023 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship, with powerhouses like Syracuse and Denver advancing to the prestigious national semifinals.
The 2024 schedule outlines an exciting array of matchups, encompassing eight CAA contests commencing on March 16. Moreover, Stony Brook’s fixture list includes compelling clashes against teams from the Big East, Big Ten, PAC-12, ACC, America East, and Ivy League, ensuring a diverse and challenging lineup.
The commencement of the season in February will see all games played on home turf at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook begins their campaign against Dartmouth (Feb. 18), followed by matches against Bryant (Feb. 20) and Arizona State (Feb. 23). Notably, the Seawolves boast an undefeated 5-0 record against these February opponents, setting a promising tone for the season’s start.
Continuing the momentum into March, Stony Brook faces Villanova (March 2) before venturing to Syracuse (March 5), where they previously secured a memorable victory in February 2020, marking the last time a non-ACC team won at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The month of March is further packed with exciting matchups, including the intriguing Johns Hopkins encounter at The Crown event in Charlotte (March 9) and a home game against Denver (March 11). March concludes with a series of pivotal conference battles against Towson (March 16), Elon (March 22), Campbell (March 24), and Monmouth (March 29).
April kicks off with two notable home games for Stony Brook against Delaware (April 6) and Rutgers (April 9). Impressively, the Seawolves have clinched victories in all three meetings against Rutgers at LaValle Stadium, including two triumphant outings in the NCAA Tournament (2021, 2022).
As the regular season progresses into April, Stony Brook embarks on away fixtures against William & Mary (April 11) and Drexel (April 14). The Seawolves then return home for pivotal CAA matchups against Hofstra (April 21) and Stanford (April 25) to culminate the regular season, setting the stage for a thrilling finale.
LaValle Stadium is set to host the highly anticipated 2024 CAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship, featuring semifinal matchups scheduled for Thursday, May 2, and Saturday, May 4. Stony Brook enters the championship with ambitions to defend its CAA title in the upcoming season.
